A fistula is an abnormal tunnel that forms between the inside of the anus and the skin outside it, usually developing from an old abscess. Medication cannot cure it — accurate diagnosis followed by surgery is the only permanent solution. Treatment is planned by carefully tracing the tract while protecting the anal sphincter muscles.
